There was a time when we could take visitors on to the quarry
or into the fabrication shops, but not today. All quarries in
the US are under the jurisdiction of the US Bureau of Mines and
operate under the rules of the Mine Safety and Health Act. Therefore,
as an active “mine” we have limits on what we are
allowed to do, for your safety.
We have built
an observation deck where you can see nearly all the activities
and are close enough to be plenty startled when we set off an
explosion—which occurs several times each day. The observation
deck can be reached by car, and access is open without restriction
each day that the quarry is in operation, including weekends,
during the daylight hours.
You are invited
to spend some time there, and see us at work. For additional insights,
you are invited to visit the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History,
located downtown Mount Airy.
